REVIEW: Worth Matravers Tea & Supper Room, Worth Matravers, Dorset

From the outside you would never guess what a sunny little garden oasis would be hiding behind the doors of the Worth Matravers Tea & Supper Room.

We had booked a table and it was a good job we had.The tea room’s little wild flower garden has just a handful of tables, each one shielded from the next in their own little corner of lush greenery and blooms. All but one were filled when we arrived at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon. Bursting with flowers and greenery and, for today at least, basking in the summer sun, I could not have imagined a better spot for an afternoon treat.

We had the ‘glorious afternoon tea’ which came beautifully presented on a three tier vintage cake tray, tea pot, cup and saucers. At £45 for two, its not an everyday treat, but is completely fabulous. (For £6.50 you can get a traditional afternoon tea with two scones, jam, cream and tea.)

For this you get a bottle of Lyme Bay sparkly strawberry wine (locally sourced from a winery a stones throw away in west Dorset), two toasted muffins topped with smoked salmon, vodka cream sauce and watercress, home made fruit scones with jam and Dorset clotted cream, a choice of tea or coffee and petit fours to finish. A treat for the eyes, and the taste buds, it looked so gorgeous when it arrived at the table it seemed a shame to eat it.

The sparkling wine was delicious, light and fruity, not too sweet, and fitted the occasion perfectly. My personal favourite were the muffins which were served warm with a healthy topping of smoked salmon and watercress doused in a vodka cream – don’t be put off – its delicious! The scones were served fresh and warm  with jam served in a miniature espresso cup and clotted cream in a shot glass, which I thought was a nice touch. The quality of the food more than matched up to its beautiful vintage-styled presentation in what was a perfect setting.

It is worth noting that they also offer a wide lunch and dinner menu – not just tea and cakes – which is well worth investigating. The inside of the tea room, for less sunny days, brims with vintage charm – tea pots and bunting galore!

Highly recommended if you are ever in this beautiful part of the world.
